Salt is a compound made up of two elements – sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl). It is formed when sodium, a highly reactive metal, combines with chlorine, a poisonous gas, in a chemical reaction. The resulting compound, sodium chloride (NaCl), is what we commonly refer to as salt.
