Epithelial Tissue

Definition:

Epithelial tissue is a type of biological tissue that covers the surface of the body and lines internal organs and cavities.

Structure:

Epithelial tissue is composed of closely packed cells with little to no extracellular matrix. The cells are tightly joined together by special junctions to form a continuous sheet.

Types of Epithelial Tissue:

• Simple Squamous: This type consists of a single layer of flat cells. It is found in the lining of blood vessels, the heart, and alveoli of the lungs.
• Simple Cuboidal: Comprised of a single layer of cube-shaped cells, this type lines the kidney tubules and ducts of glands.
• Simple Columnar: These cells are tall and narrow, and are found in the lining of the stomach, intestines, and parts of the respiratory tract.
• Stratified Squamous: Made up of multiple layers of flat cells, it forms the outer layer of the skin and lines the oral cavity, esophagus, and vagina.
• Stratified Cuboidal: This type is rare and found in sweat and mammary glands.
• Stratified Columnar: Also rare, it is found in the male urethra and the ducts of some glands.
• Pseudostratified Columnar: This type appears to be stratified but is actually a single layer of cells of varying heights. It lines the respiratory passages.

Functions:

• Protection: Epithelial tissue acts as a barrier to protect underlying tissues from physical and chemical injury.
• Absorption: Certain types of epithelial tissue, such as those in the intestines, are specialized for the absorption of nutrients.
• Secretion: Glandular epithelial cells secrete substances such as hormones, enzymes, and mucus.

Location:

Epithelial tissue can be found covering the body's surface (skin) and lining the internal organs and cavities.
