Pongo is the genus of the great apes known as orangutans. There are three species of orangutans within the Pongo genus: the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), and the recently identified Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis).
Orangutans are found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. The Tapanuli orangutan is specifically found in the Batang Toru forest in North Sumatra.
Orangutans are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining habitats and rehabilitate individuals rescued from the pet trade.
