The urethra is a tube that connects the urinary bladder to the urinary meatus for the removal of fluids from the body. In males, the urethra also serves as a passage for semen during ejaculation. The length and structure of the urethra differ between males and females.
In males, the urethra is longer and divided into three parts: the prostatic urethra, the membranous urethra, and the spongy (penile) urethra. In females, the urethra is shorter and opens into the vestibule, a structure of the female external genitalia.
The main function of the urethra is to eliminate urine from the body. In males, it also serves as a passage for semen during ejaculation. The urethral sphincter muscles control the flow of urine and semen through the urethra.
