What is DNA?

DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is a molecule that carries the genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth, and reproduction of all known living organisms and many viruses. It is often referred to as the "building blocks of life" because it contains the genetic information that is passed from one generation to the next.

Structure of DNA

DNA is a double-helix structure made up of nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of a sugar molecule (deoxyribose), a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base (adenine, thymine, cytosine, or guanine). The nitrogenous bases pair up with each other - adenine with thymine and cytosine with guanine - to form the rungs of the DNA ladder.
