Taxonomy is the science of classifying and naming organisms. It involves arranging living organisms into hierarchical categories based on their shared characteristics. The system of taxonomy was developed by Carolus Linnaeus in the 18th century and has since been used to organize and categorize all known species of living organisms.
Levels of Taxonomy
In the Linnaean system, organisms are classified into a hierarchy of groupings, from broad to specific. The major levels of taxonomy, from broadest to most specific, are:
Physics: Students will use scientific skills and processes to explain the interactions of matter and energy and the energy transformations that occur.
Thermodynamics: Identify and explain that heat energy is a product of the conversion of one form of energy to another.
Identify and describe the various forms of energy that are transformed in order for systems (living and non-living) to operate: Chemical - Flashlight-Light; Mechanical - Pulleys-Motion; Solar/Radiant - Solar calculator; Chemical - Plant cells.
