An acid is a chemical substance that donates a proton (H+) to another substance, known as a base. Acids are characterized by their sour taste, ability to turn blue litmus paper red, and their ability to neutralize bases.
Sulfuric acid is used in car batteries, fertilizer production, and in the production of detergents.
Nitric acid is used in the production of fertilizers, explosives, and dyes.
Acetic acid is used in food preservation and as a solvent in the production of inks and paints.
pH Scale
The strength of an acid is measured on the pH scale, which ranges from 0 to 14. Acids have a pH value less than 7, with lower pH values indicating stronger acids.
