The urethra is a tube that connects the urinary bladder to the outside of the body. It serves as a passageway for the urine to be excreted from the body. In males, it also serves as the passageway for semen during ejaculation.
The urethra is divided into two main types: the male urethra and the female urethra. In males, the urethra is longer and passes through the prostate gland and the length of the penis. In females, the urethra is shorter and opens in front of the vaginal opening.
The primary function of the urethra is to carry urine from the bladder and expel it from the body. In males, it also serves the additional function of transporting semen for ejaculation.
