Oktoberfest is the world's largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair). It is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It is a 16- to 18-day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first Sunday in October, with more than six million people from around the world attending the event every year. During the event, large quantities of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed. Visitors also enjoy numerous attractions, such as amusement rides, sidestalls, and games.
Oktoberfest originated in Munich in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the royal event. The fields were named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's Meadow") in honor of the Crown Princess, and the celebration has been held there ever since.
Traditional clothing worn at Oktoberfest includes the dirndl, a type of traditional dress for women, and lederhosen, leather breeches for men. The festival also features parades, live music, and traditional Bavarian foods such as pretzels, sausage, and roast chicken.
