Tone Study Guide
What is Tone?
Tone refers to the writer's or speaker's attitude toward the subject and the audience. It is conveyed through the writer's choice of words and the overall style of writing. Tone can be formal, informal, serious, humorous, sarcastic, empathetic, and more. It sets the mood of the piece and helps the reader understand the author's perspective.
Examples of Tone:
1. Formal: "The proceedings of the court were conducted with utmost decorum."
2. Informal: "Hey, what's up? Let's hang out later."
3. Serious: "The consequences of climate change are dire and require immediate action."
4. Humorous: "The comedian's witty remarks had the audience in stitches."
5. Sarcastic: "Oh, great. Another Monday morning."
6. Empathetic: "I understand how difficult this must be for you."
