Geometric Observations
Geometric observations involve identifying and analyzing patterns, relationships, and properties in geometric figures and shapes. By making observations about the angles, sides, and other characteristics of geometric objects, we can better understand their properties and relationships.
Study Guide
- Angles: Pay attention to the measurements and relationships between angles in different shapes. Notice any patterns or special properties, such as vertical angles being congruent or complementary angles adding up to 90 degrees.
- Lines and Segments: Look for parallel lines, perpendicular bisectors, and other relationships between lines and segments within geometric figures. Identify any special properties, such as the midpoint of a line segment dividing it into two congruent segments.
- Triangles: Study the properties of different types of triangles, such as equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles. Observe the relationships between angles and sides, including the Pythagorean theorem and the properties of special triangles like 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles.
- Quadrilaterals: Explore the properties of various quadrilaterals, including parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombuses, and trapezoids. Note the characteristics and relationships between angles, sides, and diagonals in these shapes.
- Circles: Understand the properties of circles, including the relationships between the radius, diameter, circumference, and area. Identify patterns and properties related to inscribed angles, central angles, and chords within circles.

The Number System
Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers.
Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number. [8-NS1]
Expressions and Equations
Work with radicals and integer exponents.
Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations of the form x^2 = p and x^3 = p, where p is a positive rational number. Evaluate square roots of small perfect squares and cube roots of small perfect cubes. Know that √2 is irrational. [8-EE2]
