The Jurassic Period, which occurred approximately 201 to 145 million years ago, is the middle period of the Mesozoic Era. It is named after the Jura Mountains located between France and Switzerland where rocks from this period were first studied. The Jurassic Period is known for its diverse and iconic dinosaurs, including the famous long-necked sauropods and vicious theropods.
During the Jurassic Period, the supercontinent Pangaea began to break apart, leading to the formation of the Atlantic Ocean. The shifting of tectonic plates also resulted in the formation of new mountain ranges and ocean basins. The climate was generally warm and humid, and lush vegetation covered much of the land.
The Jurassic Period was a time of great diversification for many groups of organisms, including dinosaurs, marine reptiles, and early mammals. In addition to dinosaurs, the oceans teemed with marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and ammonites. The first birds also appeared during this time.
