Parentheses in Mathematics

Parentheses are used in mathematics to indicate the order of operations in an expression. They are also used to group terms together.

Order of Operations

When solving mathematical expressions, it's important to follow the order of operations. The acronym PEMDAS can help you remember the order:

Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication and Division (from left to right)
Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)

Using Parentheses to Group Terms

When you have an expression with multiple operations, parentheses can be used to indicate which operations should be performed together. For example:

If you have the expression 2 x (3 + 4), you would first perform the operation inside the parentheses (3 + 4), and then multiply the result by 2.
