Perimeter

The perimeter of a shape is the distance around the outside of the shape. It is the sum of all the sides of the shape.

Calculating the Perimeter

To calculate the perimeter of a shape, you simply add up the lengths of all the sides. The formula to find the perimeter of a rectangle is:

Perimeter = 2 * (length + width)

For a square, where all sides are equal in length, the formula is:

Perimeter = 4 * side length

Examples

For example, if you have a rectangle with a length of 5 units and a width of 3 units, the perimeter would be:

Perimeter = 2 * (5 + 3) = 2 * 8 = 16 units

And for a square with a side length of 4 units, the perimeter would be:

Perimeter = 4 * 4 = 16 units
