Lengths

In math, length refers to the measurement of how long something is. It is often measured in standard units such as inches, feet, centimeters, meters, and kilometers. Length can be measured for various objects including lines, segments, and shapes.

Units of Length

There are different units of length used for measuring objects:

• Inches - commonly used for smaller measurements, such as the length of a pencil
• Feet - used for measuring longer objects, such as the height of a person
• Centimeters - a metric unit commonly used for smaller measurements
• Meters - a metric unit used for longer measurements, such as the length of a room
• Kilometers - used for very long distances, such as the distance between cities

Measuring Lengths

To measure the length of an object, a ruler or a measuring tape is often used. For longer distances, a measuring wheel or GPS device may be used. When measuring, it's important to line up the starting point (zero mark) of the measuring tool with one end of the object and then read the measurement at the other end.
